今回のポイントとなる、試験に頻出イディオムを、色分けして呈示致します。
Idioms -4 A while ago, I decided to put together one of those five thousand-piece jigsaw puzzles all by myself. I was sure that I could do it because I'm good at all kinds of games-from crossword puzzles to video games. But it wasn't so easy after all. First, I put all the pieces on the table, and I started to work on the sky part of the puzzle. But every other piece was blue and seemed to fit in the sky. I must have stared at the pieces for two hours. "Take it easy," I told myself. "Sooner or later you'll put some pieces together." And I was right. Before long, I had several pieces together. But finishing the entire puzzle was a project that took me quite a few months. Of course, at the end, I learned the most important fact about putting together puzzles. The last piece is always missing! Just the other day I found that missing piece behind the sofa. No wonder I hadn't found it before.

decided to：decide to 〜で、〜しようと決心する、という意味です。
put together：よせ集める・合計する・組み立てる・合成する、という意味があります。
all by myself：(all) by oneself で、ひとりぼっちで・独力で、という意味になります。I was sure that I could do it because I'm good at all kinds of games-from crossword puzzles to video games.
（直訳）クロスワードパズルからテレビゲームまで、すべての種類のゲームは得意だったので、これは出来るだろうと確信しておりました。
I was sure / that / I could do it / because / I'm good at / all kinds of games/ -from crossword puzzles to video games.
I was sure that：that 以下と確信して、という意味です。
could：仮定的なニュアンスがあると思います。ですから、この後に否定的な内容の文章が来ることを暗示してますね。
it：one of those five thousand-piece jigsaw puzzles を指しますね。
I'm good at：be good at 〜で、〜が得意である、という意味になります。But it wasn't so easy after all.
（直訳）でも、やはりそんなに簡単なものではありませんでした。

after all：文尾に置くと、やはり・結局。文頭に置くと、何といっても・とにかく、という意味になります。First, I put all the pieces on the table, and I started to work on the sky part of the puzzle.
（直訳）まず、テーブルの上にすべてのピースを置き、そして、パズルの空の部分の作業を開始しました。
First, / I / put / all the pieces / on the table, / and / I started to / work / on the sky part of the puzzle.But every other piece was blue and seemed to fit in the sky.
（直訳）しかし、一つおきのピースが青で、空の部分にフィットする様に見えてしまいます。

every other：一つおきの、という意味ですが・・・この文章では、どうも日本語にするとおかしいですね。いっそ、２つに１個は、と訳すといいのかしら？I must have stared at the pieces for two hours.
（直訳）私は、２時間の間、ピースをじっと見つめていなければいけませんでした。
I / must / have stared at the pieces / for two hours.
must：〜しなければならない（必要性）という意味になります。
have：過去形を表しています。
stare：凝視する、という意味合いがあります。"Take it easy," I told myself.
（直訳）自分自身に、「リラックスしよう」と言い聞かせました。
"Take it easy," / I / told / myself.
Take it easy：有名なイディオムですね♪リラックスしよう、気楽に行こう、そんな意味になります。"Sooner or later you'll put some pieces together."
（直訳）遅かれ早かれ、あなたはいくつかのピースを組み合わせるだろう。
"Sooner or later / you'll / put some pieces together."
Sooner or later：遅かれ早かれ・いつかは・結局は、という意味です。
you：自分に言い聞かせている訳です。ですから、"I"（私）のことですね。And I was right.
（直訳）そして、私は正しかったのです。
And / I / was / right.
right：正しい、という意味です。反対語は、wrong。Before long, I had several pieces together.
（直訳）まもなく、私は、いくつかのピースを組み合わせました。
Before long, / I / had / several pieces / together.
Before long：まもなく、遠からず、という意味です。But finishing the entire puzzle was a project that took me quite a few months.
（直訳）しかし、すべてのパズルを完成させるということは、まさに何ヶ月もかかったプロジェクトでした。
But / finishing the entire puzzle / was / a project / that / took me / quite a few months.
entire：すべての、まるまる全部の、という意味です。
that：projectにかかる、関係動名詞です。
project：一大計画・一大事業、そんなニュアンスです。
took：直訳的には、捕らえる、と考えるべきでしょうか？この場合は、プロジェクトが私を何ヶ月も捕らえ続けた、そんな意味ですね。
quite a few：たくさん（many）という意味になります。Of course, at the end, I learned the most important fact about putting together puzzles.
（直訳）当然、最後に、私は、パズルを組み合わせることについての最も重要な事実を思い知ることになりました。
Of course, / at the end, / I / learned / the most important fact / about / putting together puzzles.
Of course：当然・もちろん、という意味です。
learn：習う・覚える、という意味ですね。努力して・・・する様になる、というニュアンス。The last piece is always missing!
（直訳）最後のピースは、いつも見つからないんです。
The last piece / is / always / missing!
always：文字通りの意味は、いつも、です。でも、「いつも最後のピースが見つからない」なんて、ことありませんよね。これは、アメリカ人がよくする表現です。大げさというか・・・まぁ、気持ちはわかりますけど。
missing：見つからない・行方不明、そんな意味になります。Just the other day I found that missing piece behind the sofa.
（直訳）ごく最近、ソファの後ろで失われたピースを発見しました。
Just / the other day / I found that missing piece behind the sofa.
the other day：ごく最近（一日〜数日前）に、という意味です。No wonder I hadn't found it before.
（直訳）以前には見つからなかったのは、驚くことでもないです。
No wonder / I / hadn't / found it / before.
No wonder：正確に文章を書き直すと、It is no wonder that I had'nt ....となります。no wonder で、驚くことでもない、そんな意味です。
it：missing piece のことです。意訳
ちょっと前のことなんですが、5000ピースのジグソーパズルを独力で組み合わせてみよう、と決心したんです。クロスワードパズルからテレビゲームまで・・・どんなゲームも得意だったものですから、これもすんなり出来ると確信していました。ところが、やはり、そう簡単なものではありませんでしたよ。まず、すべてのピースをテーブルに置いて、パズルの空の部分の作業を始めました。しかし、ピースの二つに一つは青く、空の部分に合っている様に見えます。私は、２時間もこれらのピースを見つめざるを得ませんでした。「気楽に行こう」と、自分に言い聞かせました。「遅かれ早かれ、いくつかのピースを組み合わせるはず。」私が当たってました。まもなく、いくつかのピースを組み合わせられました。しかし、全てのパズルを終わらせるには、何ヶ月も要してしまったんです。もちろん、最後に、私は、パズルを組み合わせる際の重要な事実を思い知らされました。最後のピースって、いつも行方不明になっちゃうんです。ごくごく最近、私はなくなったはずのピースをソファの裏側で発見しました。以前にはそれが見当たらなかったんですが、驚くことでもないでしょう。
